Nutritional Supplements
Confused, overwhelmed, or just clueless as to what you should or should not be taking?
I can analyze your diet, lifestyle, and medical needs to formulate a customized diet and supplement program for you!
Most of us have heard from a friend, a relative, the media, or a health care professional that we should be taking certain health supplements. However, when you walk into a health food store or pharmacy looking to buy a supplement to enhance your day to day health it can be overwhelming! Having worked as a nutritionist on staff at an alternative pharmacy I have seen many people throw up their arms in frustration at the confusion they are faced with when staring at hundreds or thousands of different kinds of nutritional supplements. Here are some basic supplements to look for that will enhance and support your health:
1. Basic Multivitamin and Mineral
A “One-A-Day” or a “Two-A-Day” is a good start because it gives you a sprinkling of everything; all the vitamins and minerals. Until you visit a nutritionist or qualified health care professional who can analyze your diet and health needs, it is hard to know exactly what your individual needs are based on dietary intake, medical conditions, physical and emotional stress levels, and other factors. More is not always better!
2. Essential Fatty Acids (Omega 3s and 6s)
Fish Oil, Cod Liver Oil, Flax Oil, Evening Primrose Oil…these are all “essential fatty acids” which means that we cannot make them ourselves, they are essential to our diet. Studies have shown that an optimal ratio of Omega 3s to Omega 6s is about 1 to 3, but the average American eats a diet consisting of a ratio more like 1 to 20-30. For this reason, adding an Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs) supplement to your diet can help promote a healthier ratio of these anti-inflammatory fats.
3. Probiotics
Studies of traditional cultures around the world reveal to us that cultured or fermented foods were a daily part of a healthy diet. However, the average American does not eat cultured or fermented foods on a daily basis. Kefir, kimchi, raw sauerkraut, miso soup, tempeh, raw cottage cheese and yogurt are all examples of cultured and fermented food. Did you know that there are more bacteria in your gut than cells in your body? There are more of them than us! All the more reason to ensure that the bacteria in your gut are “friendly” rather than pathogenic. Try eating raw, fermented, or cultured foods on a daily basis or take a daily “probiotics” supplement. “Probiotic” means to promote life (ours!).
